Mattie (West) Yopp, 97, of Newington, CT died Thursday, December 1, 2016 at Bel-Air Manor, Newington. Mattie was born in Akin, South Carolina and was the daughter of the late John H. and Beulah (Smith) West. She worked as a health aide for the VNA for several years. Mattie was a member of the Anna Warmsley Temple #1073, New Britain for several years and was also a Bluebirds leader. She was a member of Grace C.M.E. Church formerly McCullough Temple C.M.E. Church, New Britain for several years.
Mattie is survived by her son Alfred Thompson of West Hartford, CT and granddaughter Lolita Thompson of Oceanside, CA, her sister Barbara Mitchell of New Britain, CT and her brother Johnny West and his wife Mattie of Bloomfield, CT, her four step-daughters that she raised, Loretta Eason, Lori McLeod, Leslie Shaw and Linda Eason and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mattie was predeceased by her brother Willie West.
Homegoing Celebration for Mattie will be held Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Second Baptist Church, 55 Chapman St., New Britain, CT with the Rev. Thomas A. Mills, Jr., Pastor, presiding. Committal service and final resting place will be in Fairview Cemetery, 120 Smalley St., New Britain, CT.
