Michael Schinas, 88, of Haddam, CT, died peacefully Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at Middlesex Hospital. Michael was born on March 23, 1928 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Andrew and Kalliope (Alevas) Schinas. A veteran of the US Army Reserve, he began his career at Standard Oil in New York City while earning his bachelor's degree in History at Fordham University. He later worked at Xerox Education Publications in Middletown, then spent six years as the owner of Midtown Photo in Middletown before retiring. Devoted to his Greek Orthodox faith, Michael was a self-taught chanter of Byzantine hymns. He was an avid classic car enthusiast.
Michael is survived by his wife of sixty-five years, Bess (Psichogios) Schinas of Haddam, CT; his children, Andrea Buergers of Poughkeepsie, NY, Michael Andrew (Mary) of Higganum, CT, and Stacey Grimaldi (James) of Higganum, CT; and eight grandchildren. Michael was predeceased by his sister, Georgia Trifon.
Funeral services for Mr. Schinas will be held Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at 10 a.m. at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 301 West Main St., New Britain, CT. Committal service and final resting place will be in Calvary Cemetery, 305 Bow Lane, Middletown, CT. Relatives and friends may call at St. George Greek Orthodox Church Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Service of comfort provided by the Paul A. Shaker Funeral Home, 764 Farmington Ave., New Britain, CT.
