John J. Niewinski, 88, of New Britain, CT died peacefully Sunday, June 25, 2017. John was born in New Britain, CT and was the son of the late Michael and Anna (Reczko) Niewinski. He worked as a foreman for Steamfitter Local. John, a highly decorated United States Marine Corps. veteran served his country honorably during the Korean War, where he received the Korean Service Medal, U.N. Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Ribbon. John received three purple hearts and was the Commander of the Chapter 51 Military Order of the Purple Heart Society, and was a member the VFW Post#511, the Northwestern T.G.M. Memorial Post, both of New Britain, CT, the Spartans Veterans Athletic Club Berlin, CT, Hardware City Marine Corps. League. He was a very active member of the VFW and the Purple Heart Society and you could always find him marching in a parade honoring those who served along with honoring the deceased military members who served by participating with the honor guard on Memorial Day and Veterans Day at the Iwo Jima Memorial and many other memorials throughout Connecticut. John was a loving husband and father who enjoyed spending most of his time with his family. He was a faithful member of Holy Cross Church, New Britain.
John is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-eight years – Irene (Kalisz) Niewinski of New Britain, CT, his three daughters - Laura Niewinski and June Anderson both of New Britain, CT and Arlene Polzun and her husband Steven of Newington, CT, his three grandchildren -Thomas John, Shelby and Avalon, his two great grandchildren - Farrah and Maya and several nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his two brothers Lawrence and Leo Niewinski and his sister Hedy Jewell.
Funeral rites for John will be held Friday, June 30, 2017 at 8:30 a.m. with the procession departing at 9 a.m. from the Paul A. Shaker Funeral Home, 764 Farmington Ave., New Britain, CT. followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Holy Cross Church, Farmington Ave., New Britain, CT. Burial with full military honors rendered by the United States Marine Corps. will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, 662 Burritt St., New Britain, CT. The American flag will be presented to John’s wife, Irene. Relatives and friends may call at the Paul A. Shaker Funeral Home Thursday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The Hardware City Marine Corps League will hold a service at 6:30 p.m. Directions to funeral home – I-84 east or west, exit 37 (Fienemann Rd) – right off exit – one mile down on right.
