Obituary for Carmen J. Mottola

Carmen J. Mottola
Carmen J. Mottola, 89, of New Britain, CT completed his life’s journey on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 after a short illness. Born in Southington, CT in 1928, he was the first child of the late John and Rose (Avitable) Mottola. Carmen served in the United States Army during the later part of World War II. After returning from overseas, he completed his education in business and he went to work for The New Britain Machine Company where he would spend over forty years in the Payroll Department until he retired as Paymaster in 1990.
In his spare time, Carmen enjoyed tinkering, woodworking, computers and rooting for his favorite teams. He would often lie awake in the evening with a radio beneath his pillow while listening to The Boston Red Sox, Green Bay Packers or UCONN Women’s Basketball. Second only to his family was his love for his summer cottage at West Hill Lake in N ew Hartford, CT. While he enjoyed relaxing at his “retreat in the mountains”, the people that knew him best would tell you that he spent just as much time digging up or building something on the property. It was not uncommon for him and his summer friends to create some sort of useful device out of discarded parts that were found at the recycling center.
Carmen is survived by his loving wife of 66 years Margaret (Soltis) Mottola of New Britain, CT, his daughter, Rosanne Vacca of Farmington, his two sons Guy Mottola and his wife Johanne of New Britain, CT and Michael Mottola and his wife Jennifer of Barkhamsted, CT. He also leaves nine cherished grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; Meghan and Scott Spurr and their daughter Kara, Sarah Mottola, Nicholas and Laura Vacca and their daughter Charlotte, Ryan Vacca, Luke Mottola, John and Sarah Mottola and their children David, Nina and Jacob, Christopher Mottola, Geoffrey Mottola and Cooper O’Connor. Carmen is also survived by his beloved sister Connie Coccomo and her husband Thomas of New Britain along with several nieces and nephews. Carmen was predeceased by his infant son John Carmen.
Funeral Rites for Carmen will he held Monday, February 26, 2018 at 8:30 a.m. with the procession departing at 9 a.m. from the Paul A. Shaker Funeral Home, 764 Farmington Ave., New Britain, CT., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Ann Church, 101 North St., New Britain, CT.
