Obituary for Donald R. Peters

Donald Robert Peters, 84, of New Britain, CT died Saturday, April 7, 2018 at home surrounded by his loving family. Donald was born on May 15, 1933 in Torrington, CT and was the son of the late George and Christine (DeDominic) Peters. The family moved to New Britain in 1938 and Donald graduated from New Britain High School in 1951. After graduating, he served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, stationed in Germany. Donald returned to New Britain following his service, where he married Louise (Memoe) in October 1956. Louise predeceased him in May 2017, after sixty years of marriage. Donald was employed as a police officer with the New Britain Police Department for twenty-eight years, retiring in 1983. He then worked twelve years for the State of Connecticut. Donald’s favorite activities included woodworking, projects around his home or helping others with home improvement, watching old Western programs on television while sitting in his favorite chair.

Donald leaves his three children, Catherine Paldino and her husband William of Peachtree City, Ga.; Michael Peters and his wife Susan of Plainville; and Laurie Wasik and her husband Thomas of Sebastian, Fla.; three grandchildren, Stephanie (Peters) Romeo and her husband Charles of Rutland, Vt.; Steven Peters and his partner Lyz Tomsuden of Rutland, Vt., and Frank Paldino and his fiancée Ranya Hussein of Peachtree City, Ga.; and a great-grandson, William Atticus Romeo of Rutland, Vt. He is also survived by a brother, Robert Peters and his wife Patricia of Berlin, a brother-in-law George Haddad of Waterbury, and many nieces and nephews, and his little buddy “Benji.” Donald was predeceased by his wife Louise Peters, his brother, George Peters; his three sisters, Georgette Haddad, Molly D’Angelo, and Beatrice Grem; and his in-laws, Martin and Eva Memoe. Donald’s family would like to express its deepest gratitude to Beth DeMaria for the loving care she provided to both Donald and Louise.

Funeral rites for Donald will be held Friday, April 13, 2018 at 8:30 a.m. with the procession departing at 9 a.m. from the Paul A. Shaker Funeral Home, 764 Farmington Ave., New Britain, CT., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Jerome Church, 1010 Slater Rd., New Britain, CT. Full military honors will be accorded for Mr. Peters by the United States Army will be held Friday after the Mass. The American flag will be presented to Donald’s son, Michael. Burial will be private in St. Mary Cemetery,
Brandon, VT at the convenience of the family. Relatives and friends may call at the Paul A. Shaker Funeral Home, Thursday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Directions to funeral home – I-84 east or west, exit 37 (Fienemann Rd), right off exit – one mile down on right.
