Obituary for Matthew E. Shirley

Matthew E. Shirley, 86, of New Britain, Ct., passed away peacefully Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at home. Matthew was born in New Britain, Ct. and was the son of the late Matthew D. and Alice (LaGasse) Shirley. He worked for several years for Southern New England Telephone Company, retiring as a manager in 1988. Matthew served honorably with the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the Elks Lodge #957, the Bristol Fish & Game Club, the DAV and the VFW.

Matthew is survived by his wife, Helene (Bourret) Shirley of New Britain, his daughter Lisa Kiley of New Britain, his two sons, James Shirley and his wife, Lori of Berlin, Thomas Shirley and his wife, Deborah of Bristol, and his daughter-in-law, Deena Shirley of Bristol; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Matthew was predeceased by his son, Edward Shirley, his daughter, Karen Shirley, his brother, Raymond Shirley and his sister, Penelope Bissonette.

Funeral rites for Matthew will be held Saturday, December 22, 2018 at 8:30 a.m. with the procession departing at 9 a.m. from the Paul A. Shaker Funeral Home, 764 Farmington Ave., New Britain, CT, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, 655 East Street, New Britain, CT. Burial with full military honors rendered by the United States Air Force will be in St. Mary Cemetery, 1141 Stanley Street, New Britain, CT. The American flag will be presented to Mr. Shirley’s wife, Helene. Relatives and friends may call at the Paul A. Shaker Funeral Home, Friday from 4-7 p.m. Directions to funeral home I-84 east or west, exit 37 (Fienemann Rd.), right off exit – one mile down on right. The Elks Lodge #957 will hold a ritual Friday at 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Center, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or the Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256.
