Who He Was to Me

The last time I saw Henry Yousef was August of 2004. This is when I told him I was moving to Arkansas and I knew in my heart that as much as I would have like to see him again in the future that I would never see him again. He told me that he knew that he was going to die early in life and I believed it.

We met in high school and somehow we grew a strange liking to each other. We came from very different worlds, but he taught me that regardless of everyone's differences we are all capable of caring for each other. I and his best friend Tony were always annoyed by him, but we were always drawn to spending time with him. There was something special about him. Maybe it was the way that he was overly protective over anyone he grew to care for or maybe it was the way he was always concerned about his family's well-being. Many throughout high school believed he was not smart, they made fun of him and mocked him, yet he kept a smile on his face and courageously continued to live his life regardless of what others thought. It was different for those who he opened his heart to, we knew that although he was simple and eccentric in his ways, he understood matters of life that many of his peers could not. In his youth to me, he was brave and was a friend that has obtained a special place in my heart. A friend like no other.
