Kenneth R. Cullum, 80, of Farmington, CT formerly of New Britain, CT passed away peacefully Monday, March 19, 2018 at Amberwoods of Farmington. Kenneth was born in New Britain on August 27, 1937. He was the son of the late John “Jack” Cullum Sr. and Gertrude (York) Cullum of New Britain. Ken graduated from New Britain High School in 1955 where he served as treasurer of the Athletic Association, played football, basketball, and was elected captain of the baseball team in his senior year. He attended UCONN and graduated with a degree in Physical Education. While there he continued his baseball career serving as captain in 1959. UCONN’s three senior outfielders signed major league contracts upon graduation. Ken picked the Milwaukee Braves. He retired after playing with several minor league clubs. Ken also enjoyed fast pitch softball with local teams. He worked for National Inventory Service, the Hartford Courant, and Moore Medical. When Ken was not involved with baseball, he loved to fish. Guess who always had his line in the water first?
Ken is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Janice and Ray Koley of New Britain, CT, his brother and sister-in law John (Jack) Jr. and Mary Ann Cullum of Newington, CT, his nephew Jason and his wife Kate (Baumann) Cullum his nieces Ava Grace and Violet Olivia all of Baltimore, MD and many loving cousins.
A Celebration of Ken’s life will be held Tuesday, March 27, 2018 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. from the Paul A. Shaker Funeral Home, 764 Farmington Ave., New Britain, CT. Directions to funeral home – I-84 east or west, exit 37 (Fienemann Rd) right off exit, one mile down on right. Committal service and final resting place will be private in St. Mary Cemetery, New Britain, CT. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the New Britain Boys & Girls Club, 150 Washington St., New Britain, CT. 06051.
